In the News / Celebrity Astrology Edmund Hillary - Jan 08 20 July 1919 4pm Tuakau, New Zealand
Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to scale the world's highest peak, Mount Everest in the Himalayas, along with Tibetan Sherpa Tensing has just died. Born on 20 July 1919, 4pm, Tuakau, New Zealand, he was extraordinarily a Sun Jupiter in Cancer in the 7th and about as far removed from a dependent homebody as one could imagine. He was by all accounts a confident, though not flamboyant or ego centred personality. What marked him out was 'his demonic energy' stemming from a Mars Pluto in Cancer in the 6th trine Uranus so he used his energy ruthlessly, being attracted to risk and danger. Brought up by a father who reacted against his own feckless father's lifestyle (Hillary's grandfather) by holding harshly austere and rigidly moral views, he brought his son up to ignore physical illness and beat him regularly. Mars Pluto did the toughening up early on. Being in the 6th one might suspect a lifetime of illness rather than feats of physical endurance and he did indeed have major physical dramas which he overcame. In 1945 when transitting Saturn was conjunct his 6th house Mars Pluto and Pluto was conjunct his Neptune on the cusp of the 8th, he suffered 40% burns when the petrol tank of a speedboat he was piloting went on fire. In 1961 he had a minor stroke and in 1977 he had a cerebral oedema, both suffered when climbing at a high altitude. He later admitted that he had been too gung ho about the risks of climbing. His father's harshness, while spurring him on, also clearly left him in denial about the limits of his body's capacity. His 4th house Aries Moon trines an 8th house Saturn and Mercury in Leo suggesting an excitable father who provided a foundation for his life but with little intimacy. Saturn in late Leo opposes Uranus squaring onto the Moon's North Node in Sagittarius (in 11th), so he could be erratic, at times dictatorial, but clearly managed to harness the contradictory nature of the opposition into a team effort (11th) which hit the zeitgeist (NNode). Interesting the Sag Moon North Node often means the bearer is of great service to the career of another - and he made great efforts to give Sherpa Tensing equal recognition for the record climb. He scaled Mount Everest reaching the summit on 29th May 1953 at 11.30 am local time (presumably Nepal time?), the news reaching Britain on the eve of Queen Elizabeth's Coronation to much celebration. The Sun, Jupiter, Mercury were all transitting his 5th house (sport) on 29th May, with Mars also there on the ascent, just moving into the 6th as he reached the top. Uranus was exactly opposition his Ascendant as he moved into a time of world fame, transforming his image. An exact Saturn Neptune conjunction was in his 10th with Pluto transitting his 8th. These two latter are interesting since they can both be seen as problematic. Pluto in the 8th is usually thought of as stuck, yet for Hillary as with Evel Knievel (see 1 Dec 07 below), it coincided with his greatest physical feat. Which just goes to show it's how you use the influences that matters. His Secondary Progressed Moon was exactly conjunct his 7th house Sun so he'd feel his life was coming together for a new beginning. His Secondary Progressed Sun in his 8th was one year past a conjunction with Saturn - so again he rose above setbacks which clearly spurred him on to greater heights. For midpoint watchers: On 29th May transitting Saturn and Neptune were conjunct his Sun/Asc and Jupiter/Asc; and Uranus was conjunct Sun/Pluto and Jupiter/Pluto.
